For Evelyn Balderas, wrestling began as something much deeper than wins and losses. It was an outlet — a way to focus, reset, and channel energy during a challenging time in her life. What started as a distraction quickly became a purpose.

“I was going through a lot and needed a distraction, so I joined wrestling,” Balderas said.

Now a senior at San Benito High School, Balderas is undefeated this season and putting together the best run of her career, with her sights set firmly on a first trip to the UIL State Tournament and a run at the state podium.

Growth Beyond the Results

While the record jumps off the page, those closest to Balderas say the real transformation happened well before this season ever began.

Her coach, Naikoa Simao, has watched her evolve from a talented athlete into a disciplined competitor who understands what it takes to win at a high level.

“The biggest growth I’ve seen in Evelyn is her maturity — both as an athlete and as a competitor,” Simao explained. “That shift really happened when she stopped chasing results and fully committed to the process of getting better every day.”

That commitment showed up everywhere: year-round training, consistency long before the season started, and a willingness to follow the work wherever it was required. Training out of Makana Fight Academy, Balderas bought into a long-term vision and trusted it fully.

Competing Up — and Breaking Through

One of the most defining stretches of Balderas’ career came when she challenged herself to wrestle two weight classes higher. The results weren’t always perfect, but the experience changed how she saw herself.

“All my wins from the past year — I wrestled two weight classes heavier and still did amazing in every match,” Balderas said. “Seeing my performance within the challenge motivated me to only push harder. Even after losses, I could feel how much potential I had.”

That willingness to embrace discomfort and learn from adversity now shows up in how she competes. Balderas describes herself as emotionally intelligent on the mat — aware of what she needs to do to win, and just as importantly, what not to do to lose.

A Style Built on Relentless Pressure

Despite her breakout season, Simao believes many still underestimate what makes Balderas dangerous.

“People underestimate her mindset and her work ethic,” he said. “She’s solid in just about every position. Her hand fighting and ability to create openings are on another level. On top, she’s extremely tough — constantly breaking opponents down and always looking to score.”

As the postseason pressure rises, that foundation is exactly what her coach trusts most.

“She stays disciplined, fundamentally sound, and in control of the match,” Simao said. “She understands positioning and timing. She doesn’t panic. She trusts her training and imposes her will.”

Wrestling With Purpose

For Balderas, the motivation goes beyond medals. Her family remains her constant support system, and she credits their presence — along with her coach’s guidance — for helping turn potential into performance.

Her goals this season are simple, but powerful: push past her limits every single day.

And when younger wrestlers watch her compete, the message she hopes they take away is the same one that has guided her own journey.

“Always keep pushing,” she said.

Off the mat, Balderas keeps things light — she’ll happily rewatch The Walking Dead endlessly — but when it comes to Texas wrestling, her perspective is sharp and confident.

“The underdogs always show up.”

This season, Evelyn Balderas is proving that with trust in the process, discipline in the details, and belief in herself, the underdog doesn’t just show up — she breaks through.
