For much of the season, Emmie Guitron has quietly put together one of the most impressive résumés in the Houston area. The Atascocita sophomore has just two losses on the year, climbed into the top four of the Houston rankings, and positioned herself as one of the area’s most compelling breakout wrestlers.

What makes her rise notable isn’t just the wins—it’s how deliberately she approaches each one.

Guitron’s wrestling roots run deep. Her father wrestled in high school, and growing up, wrestling was simply part of family life. Add in years of karate—eight and a half, capped by earning a black belt—and the transition to the mat felt natural. But what ultimately kept her in the sport was something more personal: wrestling became time shared with her dad, a bond that turned training and competition into something meaningful beyond results.

That foundation has shaped how Guitron carries herself today. While her record tells one story, her mindset tells another.

“One of the biggest things that sets me apart,” she says, “is something my coach drilled into me when I was struggling mentally: Every match starts at 0–0.” It’s a simple phrase, but one that has defined how she competes. Win or lose, Guitron believes there’s always something to improve—and that belief has kept her aggressive, present, and constantly learning.

Ironically, a recent moment that sharpened that mindset came in a loss.

A recent match against Minha Castillo forced Guitron to confront a dangerous comfort zone. She admits she had started feeling like she was doing “well enough.” Castillo changed that. The match was a wake-up call—proof that standing still in this sport means falling behind. Rather than discouraging her, it refocused her. “I’m grateful for that match,” Guitron says. “It reminded me to keep improving.”

Behind the scenes, Guitron is surrounded by a support system built for development. She trains at Rise Wrestling Club, working daily with coaches who push both her physical and mental growth. Her ihgh school coach remains a steady presence, while her family’s constant encouragement keeps her grounded. None of it is taken for granted.

That perspective shows up when she talks about her goals. Qualifying for the state tournament is the clear target, but the motivation runs deeper. This season has come with doubt—people telling her she doesn’t have what it takes. For a time, that noise lingered. Now, it fuels her. Guitron leans on her faith, her work ethic, and the belief of those closest to her, confident that preparation will speak louder than opinion.

When younger wrestlers watch her compete—especially her sister—Guitron hopes they notice more than technique. She wants them to see perseverance. Tough days. Matches that don’t go your way. And the decision not to quit anyway.

Off the mat, her intensity gives way to something quieter. Guitron is an avid reader, a self-described bookworm with a mini library at home that’s quickly outgrowing its shelves. She jokes, “ If I could, I’d probably work at a bookstore just for the book discounts.”

That balance—edge and reflection, urgency and patience—is what makes Emmie Guitron dangerous as the season moves forward. In Texas wrestling, where pressure never lets up and action is nonstop, she’s learned how to keep pushing even when the scoreboard resets to zero.

And that may be her greatest strength of all.
