At Bryan High School, sophomore standout Katelynn Dockery has quickly established herself as one of the most exciting wrestlers in the state of Texas—and one of the most dangerous.

After placing 6th at the UIL State Tournament as a freshman, Dockery returned this season with a clear leap forward, finishing as a state runner-up at 100 pounds. But the jump from sixth to second only tells part of the story. What truly stood out was the evolution of her wrestling: sharper, more composed, and far more complete.

Dockery’s matches have long been must-watch, thanks to her ability to end bouts in an instant. Her high-amplitude upper-body throws have become her signature—highlight-reel techniques that often lead directly to pins. It’s a style that makes her a fan favorite, but one she has worked to build upon.

“I’ve really tried to focus on becoming a more well-rounded wrestler,” Dockery explained. “I focused on building my confidence by going out and hitting a wider variety of attacks rather than relying entirely on my upper-body attacks.”

That intentional growth showed throughout the season. While her throws remain a constant threat, opponents now have to account for a much broader offensive arsenal—making her even more difficult to prepare for.

Interestingly, those dynamic throws didn’t come from a judo background or another martial art. Instead, they were developed entirely through wrestling.

“My upper-body throws actually come strictly from wrestling,” she said. “Legacy Wrestling encourages everyone to try all three styles, which really helped me develop my style.”

That exposure to freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling has paid major dividends. Dockery is already a Fargo All-American, placing at the 16U national tournament—an accomplishment that puts her among the nation’s elite.

While her throws are a powerful weapon, Dockery doesn’t rely on them alone.

“I wouldn’t necessarily view them as a knockout punch,” she said. “But they are definitely a reliable weapon. It’s great knowing that I have them in my back pocket whenever I may need them.”

Even with a reputation that precedes her, Dockery stays locked into her own approach.

“I feel as though my opponents are definitely aware of my throwing ability,” she said. “However, I don’t let that affect my matches. I focus on wrestling my match and staying aggressive.”

That mindset—combined with her technical growth—has been key to her success.

Dockery’s journey in the sport began early, stepping onto the mat at just seven years old alongside her brother after their father encouraged them to give wrestling a try. Since then, the sport has become something deeper than competition.

“I loved knowing that the outcome of a match depends entirely on my own hard work and discipline,” she said. “There’s no better feeling than seeing the direct results of the time and effort you have put in.”

That internal drive continues to fuel her progression, both in folkstyle and in her favorite disciplines—freestyle and Greco.

“I love the high intensity they require,” she said. “Traveling to those high-level tournaments also provides great exposure to college coaches while helping me become a better wrestler.”

Despite her growing reputation and crowd appeal, Dockery keeps her focus grounded.

“I wouldn’t necessarily see myself as an entertainer,” she said. “But I believe it’s my aggressive, not-afraid-to-go-after-someone style that makes my matches exciting.”

Looking ahead, Dockery has her sights set on continued growth and bigger goals. Her immediate focus is on freestyle and Greco state, where she’s preparing the same way she always has—through consistent work and discipline.

“Just going to practices and putting in the extra work when no one is watching.”

Long term, her ambitions stretch far beyond the high school level.

“I plan to wrestle at the collegiate level,” she said. “Beyond that, I have my eyes set on representing the country by making a few world teams.”

Through it all, one influence has remained constant: her father.

“He’s been there every step of the way,” Dockery said. “Beyond teaching me moves, he’s taught me the mindset to succeed… how to win and lose like a champion.”

But behind the scenes, another pillar has played an equally important role in her journey—her mom.

“My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader throughout my wrestling journey,” Dockery shared. “She’s always been the one to take me to those early practices and those extra practices. I wouldn’t be the athlete I am today without her constant encouragement and everything she’s done behind the scenes that helped me become the wrestler I am and where I am in my journey today.”

It’s that support system—paired with high-level skill, relentless work ethic, and the right mindset—that separates Dockery from the pack.

From a sixth-place freshman to a state finalist sophomore, her trajectory is clear. And if this season was any indication, Katelynn Dockery isn’t just improving—she’s building toward something much bigger.
