Kayla Dunn didn’t stumble into wrestling by accident — she was drawn to it by the energy. When the Cy Park high school team brought mats down to the middle school, the physicality and flash immediately caught her attention. “The slamming and flashy moves caught my eye,” Dunn said, but it was the idea of wrestling as an individual sport that truly hooked her. She liked the accountability of it, the chance to impose her will, and she joined as a freshman knowing the sport would demand everything she put into it.

Now a senior and the #3 ranked 125-pound wrestler in Houston, Dunn enters the postseason as one of the most proven competitors in the region. A state qualifier a year ago, she has taken a clear step forward this season, winning two tournaments and reaching the finals of three others, all while navigating one of the deepest weight classes in the area. Her résumé reflects both consistency and volume, built against elite competition, and she’s been a key piece of a Cy Park girls program that has stacked wins all season and is rapidly becoming a postseason threat.

What separates Dunn isn’t a single technical advantage, but the way she attacks the grind. “I think my drive to get better separates me from other wrestlers,” she said. “I push myself every practice. I wrestle like if my legs would break the next day, and I’m always looking to improve something.” That urgency has defined her senior year and allowed her to keep closing the gap with the best wrestlers in the state.

That mindset was sharpened by disappointment. At last year’s state tournament, Dunn dropped her second match — a loss that lingered long after the bracket closed. In the aftermath, a Bridgeland coach offered her advice she’s never forgotten: she should never want to feel that disappointment again. Dunn took it to heart. “Now I think about what he told me and I’m ready for every match to come,” she said, carrying that lesson into every postseason opportunity since.

Behind her growth is a coaching staff she trusts deeply. Dunn credits her coaches as the biggest influence on her development, pushing her through both good days and difficult ones, helping her believe in herself, and reinforcing lessons that extend beyond wrestling. They’ve emphasized respect and hard work, values that show clearly in the way she competes and carries herself.

As the postseason approaches, Dunn’s goal is direct and deeply personal. “I’m chasing to be on that state podium and to prove everyone who believed in me right,” she said. When younger wrestlers or fans watch her compete, she hopes they see more than the final score. “I hope younger wrestlers see the respect I have for other wrestlers, my grit, and my hard work I put in matches,” she said — a reflection of the example she tries to set every time she steps on the mat.

Away from competition, Dunn has a creative side most wouldn’t expect. She’s been playing guitar, keyboard, and drums for nearly ten years, a passion that balances the physical demands of wrestling and reminds her there’s more to life than results alone.
