Saul Gutierrez: The Cuban Grappler Conquering Texas Mats

Saul Gutierrez’s rise to the UIL State wrestling tournament podium is a story of dedication, adaptation, and the power of a diverse skill set. A natural athlete, Saul, originally from Cuba, started his martial arts journey with judo. In fact, he’s a National Champion in judo, and it was that background that led him to the sport of wrestling.

Saul’s wrestling career began unexpectedly. One day, his coach visited his classroom after learning he had a judo background and invited him to try out wrestling practice. Saul didn’t hesitate, and as soon as he started showing up to practice, he found that wrestling was a perfect complement to his judo experience. “I really enjoyed it,” Saul recalls. “I learned I could use judo in my wrestling.”

The transition wasn’t as difficult as one might expect, thanks to his previous experience in judo. Saul’s judo skills translated well into wrestling, especially his ability to throw opponents, a technique he learned in his early judo training. However, he doesn’t rely solely on throwing in every match. “I mix things up from time to time,” he says, noting that variety is a key part of his wrestling strategy.

Wrestling quickly became more than just a way to stay in shape for judo; it became a sport he genuinely enjoyed. Saul’s motivation to compete is clear: “I wrestle to condition myself for judo.” However, his drive for success in wrestling also grew. "Competitions, because I have a shot at a medal," he says, showing a clear focus on reaching the top.

Throughout the season, Saul’s teammates and coaches played a crucial role in his success. “My team supported me so much, letting me borrow headphones, gifting me food, helping me stay disciplined in practice, and supporting me at every match,” he says. His coaches, too, kept him focused and on track. “They always made sure I stayed on point, helping me remember to make weight and teaching me the intricacies of wrestling.”

After a solid season, where Gutierrez placed in 5 different tournaments, including a title at the Woodlands Invitational in December, Gutierrez entered the postseason in a crowded 175 lb weight class in Region 3. Gutierrez won the Cy Fair District tournament, setting himself up for a loaded Region 3 bracket. In that tournament, Gutierrez dropped his third match of the season to Jemarion Moore of Westside, before winning two tough matches in the consolations to finish third and lock in a spot at the state tournament.

At the state tournament, Gutierrez had an upset win the first round, utilizing some of his unique throwing ability to take out John Helton of Plano. Gutierrez dropped to the next match to one of the tournament favorites, before making a run through the consolation round to set up another match with Jemarion Moore of Westside. This time it was in the blood round to decide who would earn a spot on the state podium. Gutierrez wasted no time in this crucial match, forcing the action from the first whistle and getting to his upper body ties. He was able to toss Moore to his back by the end of the first period and secure the pin and a spot on the state podium.

The defining moment of Saul’s season came when he scored the pin that secured his place on the state tournament podium. “I was very proud of myself because I hyped myself before my match to beat my opponent and I felt confident with myself and my abilities,” he says. Standing on the podium with his medal around his neck, Saul had a moment of disbelief. “I was like, I made it, even though it felt unreal and I didn’t believe where I was standing.”

Looking ahead, Saul is far from satisfied. “My plans are to go up to the 190 weight class,” he says. “I’m coming for that state title next year. I want to put on a lot more muscle and increase my wrestling skills.” With his determination, the sky's the limit for this rising star.

Saul’s journey has been nothing short of impressive. Starting in Cuba as a judo National Champion and transitioning into wrestling with determination, he now stands as one of the best in the state of Texas. His story is a testament to hard work, versatility, and the power of believing in yourself. And this is just the beginning.
