For many athletes, a championship title is the culmination of years of practice, setbacks, and growth. For Emily Beltran, the Texas high school wrestling state champion at 107 lbs, that journey began in an entirely different sport before transitioning into the world of wrestling—and ultimately, into the history books.

Beltran didn’t start out with dreams of dominating the mat. Her journey to wrestling greatness began at age 11 with jiu-jitsu. "I started jiu-jitsu at the age of 11 and quickly found success," she recalls. Her early success laid a foundation, but it wasn’t until she discovered the girls' wrestling team at Katy High School that she realized her true passion.

A New Challenge

The transition into wrestling came naturally for Beltran. “I learned that high school had a girls' wrestling team, so I decided to give it a shot,” she explains. What followed was a whirlwind of learning, growth, and a deep love for the sport. Under the guidance of her coaches, she developed her skills and discovered a new world where hard work and perseverance paid off.

For Beltran, wrestling is about more than just the competition. "I wrestle because I enjoy the feeling of success from working hard," she says, acknowledging that while not many women participate in the sport, she is grateful to be part of the small but passionate community. It’s clear that her drive is fueled by more than just winning—it’s about being part of something bigger, something unique, and something that challenges her on every level.

A Tough Beginning: Freshman and Sophomore Struggles

Beltran’s wrestling career began with a close call. As a freshman, she finished 5th at the Regional Tournament, just one spot away from qualifying for the state tournament. While she was disappointed, she used this near-miss as motivation to improve and set her sights on future success.

By her sophomore year, Beltran began to find her rhythm. She progressed steadily throughout the season, winning a District title and securing a 3rd-place finish at the Regional Tournament to qualify for the state tournament for the first time. However, her debut at the state level didn’t go as planned. She was placed in a tough bracket, facing off against the eventual third-place and sixth-place finishers right away. She finished 0-2, but the experience was a crucial stepping stone in her development as a wrestler.

Although the state tournament ended quickly for Emily that year, she knew that it was a matter of time before she would be able to reach her potential.

Consistency and Mindset: The Keys to Success

While Beltran has been an outstanding wrestler for years, the 2024-25 season marked a turning point. "The biggest change from last year to this year has been my consistency and motivation," she says. “Having someone who pushes you makes all the difference.” One of Beltan’s primary training partners is Natalie Roberson, who just placed third in the state at 100 lbs. Beltran credits Roberson as a constant source of support and encouragement, as she was key to her breakthrough year. Yet, it was her internal drive that truly transformed her approach to the sport.

“My drive to be more than just average or 'good enough' has been a major motivator,” she shares, a mindset that propelled her to the next level. The results were undeniable, as she racked up wins and refined her technique to the point where her state title win became a real possibility.

The Path to the Title

As the season progressed, Beltran began to recognize the signs of her own potential. She didn't have one specific match that made her believe in her championship ability; rather, it was a series of moments that showed her the fruits of her hard work. "The good habits that I was creating were working not only in the room, but in competition as well," she says. She credits her positive mindset as a game-changer—not just in wrestling but in everyday life as well.

Throughout the season, her teammates played a pivotal role in her success. “My teammates always kept me motivated,” she says, adding that their unwavering belief in her abilities helped her push through challenges. They weren’t just training partners; they were friends who celebrated each victory and supported each other when things got tough.

A Giant Leap: Junior Year

The jump Beltran made from an 0-2 finish at the state tournament as a sophomore to an undefeated state champion as a junior was nothing short of remarkable. This season, Beltran elevated her game to a whole new level, combining her wrestling skills with the mental toughness needed to become a true champion. Her success was not accidental; it was the result of focused training, dedication, and learning from past experiences.

One of the biggest tests of her season came in the Regional finals against Arianna Beltran of Cypress Ranch, a returning state runner-up. Both girls entered the match undefeated, but Emily was considered the underdog. Despite this, she kept her composure, capitalized on the wrestling exchanges, and proved to be the more effective scrambler. In a thrilling and hard-fought match, Emily came out on top, securing the Regional title and a spot in the state tournament.

A Perfect State Tournament

That victory in the Regional finals set the stage for an incredible state tournament run. Beltran’s state tournament journey started with a couple of dominant pins, but the real test came in the semifinals against freshman phenom Allessandra Toscano of El Paso Eastwood. The match was tough, but Emily showed why she was a force to be reckoned with, winning 6-3 to move on to the title match.

In the finals, Beltran faced senior Fiona Smith from El Paso Franklin. From the beginning of the match, Beltran was in control. She scored three takedowns before pinning Smith in the second period, securing the state championship and capping off a perfect season. When the referee slapped the mat to end the match, a wave of joy, relief, and disbelief appeared to wash over Beltran. It was the culmination of all her hard work, determination, and perseverance.

The Moment of Triumph

When it finally came time for the state finals, the feeling was almost surreal. "It all felt so surreal—I never imagined myself reaching the state finals, let alone winning a state title," she says. But as she stood on the podium, the reality of her achievement began to sink in. “My main thought standing on the podium with the bracket was 'Am I really here?' or 'Is this real?'” she laughs, still in awe of the journey that had brought her to this moment.

In the final moments of the match, she scored the pin that secured her state title, solidifying her place in history. It wasn’t just the victory that made the moment special—it was the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and belief in herself.

A Strong Team Behind Her

One of the key elements behind Emily Beltran’s rise to the top of Texas girls' wrestling has been the unwavering support from her coaches and teammates at Katy High School. The bond within the team is undeniable, and it’s clear that both the coaching staff and her fellow wrestlers played a crucial role in her development and ultimate success.

Beltran credits her coaches for helping her maintain a strong, positive mindset throughout the season. “My coaches helped me to keep a good mindset and to focus on what was right in front of me,” she says. Their support and technical advice not only helped refine her wrestling skills but also ensured she stayed mentally prepared. This focus on the present moment, rather than worrying about future outcomes, was key to her growth and success.

In addition to the coaching, the close-knit atmosphere within the Katy High girls' wrestling team has been a game-changer for Beltran. “We go through everything together. We motivate each other, teach each other, and most importantly, we all want to see each other succeed,” she reflects. The mutual support among teammates has created an environment where everyone is committed to helping one another improve and excel. For Beltran, knowing that she was never alone in her pursuit of excellence made all the difference.

This culture of camaraderie was evident throughout the season, and it played a significant role in Beltran’s achievements. Her state championship was not just an individual triumph but a reflection of the strength of the entire Katy High School wrestling team. This season, four girls from Katy High qualified for the state tournament, and all four returned with state medals. As a result, the Katy girls’ team finished 3rd in the state, a remarkable accomplishment that speaks to the depth and talent within the program.

Looking Ahead

Despite her success, Beltran isn’t resting on her laurels. She has big goals for the future, not just for herself, but for the next generation of female wrestlers. "My future goals are to be an inspiration to younger girls and to keep a positive mindset throughout every challenge," she says.

For Beltran, the journey is far from over. In the immediate future Beltran says that she is, “planning to wrestle freestyle this summer and aims to compete at the collegiate level.” As she looks ahead, her story is one of resilience, determination, and breaking barriers. With the bigger picture in mind, Beltran says, “I’ve placed my future in God’s hands and have faith that it will be bright." She has not only earned a state title but has paved the way for other young girls to follow in her footsteps—proving that with hard work, a positive mindset, and a supportive community, anything is possible.
